    Merritt Homes & Culture

Merritt homes are rooted in the city's history and country culture. The rich grasslands around Merritt were historically ideal for raising livestock, and even today you'll often see cattle grazing and roaming about in cattle ranches. Douglas Lake Ranch is one such place, established in 1884 and now Canada's largest working ranch. The historic Quilchena Hotel at the ranch is one of the many historical buildings that can be found around Merritt and add to the city's unique charm.

Merritt is nicknamed the "Country Music Capital of Canada," thanks to draws like the once-popular Merritt Mountain Music Festival. The festival was cancelled in 2012, but 2015 marks the first year for the Rockin' River Musicfest, a new four-day country music festival that's set on bringing Merritt back on the music map. Merritt also has a number of rodeos held in the spring, summer, and fall months, most notably the Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo and Fall Fair.
